Simple Healthy Smoothies Make Healthy Kids
Keeping kids healthy is every mothers major concern, but when it comes to eating, well, sometimes they make it really difficult for us. My children all ate healthy nutritious food when they were small, but as they grew they would eat less and less of the fresh fruits and vegetables I gave them, apparently believing that anything which came in breadcrumbs was infinitely superior to anything that could be peeled, or worst of all, might have juice.
When I was pregnant with my first I got a craving for ice cream, but found it all had a horrible after taste. I drove everyone mad until my husband bought me an ice cream maker so I could make my own, and not surprisingly, freed from additives and preservatives, I found mine tasted pretty good.
So when my son was born we kept up with the ice cream and added real fruit, then added some milk to it and created a wonderful cold drink, a healthy smoothie you might say.
One of the great things about healthy smoothies is that they are a great way to introduce new fruits to the kids. Fore example apples are a nutritious fruit and so we often use apple juice as the foundation of our smoothies, but did you know that pomegranates are also extremely good for you? When I first read about their health benefits I was amazed, and while many apply more to adults than to children (lowering blood pressure and cholesterol), I was particularly interested in the claim that it can prevent dental plaque as well as plaque build up in the arteries.
Smoothies are a wonderful way to get your children to eat fresh fruit, but you do have to be careful about the sugar content. There's not much point in preventing plaque if your kids teeth are rotting from too much sugar. Pomegranate juice is a little tart, but you can add just add little honey.
1 carton of blueberry yogurt
1 cup frozen (or fresh) mixed berries
1/2 cup pomegranate juice
If you use fresh berries add a couple of ice cubes. If you'd like it sweeter, add a little honey.
When kids go back to school they always catch cold, so it's a good idea to boost their immune system if you can. Again pomegranates are a good choice, but they can be a pest to prepare and the arils are fiddly, but they do make a really good smoothie which can be used for breakfast.
1 cup of milk
1 large banana
2 tablespoons of sliced almonds
1 cup frozen (or fresh) mixed berries
1 cup pomegranate juice
Once again you can add honey to taste and even some protein powder.
Both pomegranate juice and bananas are good sources of potassium, the third most common mineral in the body and completely essential to health.
